How the Silent Auction got started:
For those that might not know how this auction got started, in 2000-2001 a fund raising project was initiated for the NYA to get a bunch of things donated that could be auctioned off on eBay. Quite a few people sent donated items to HDSA but the eBay auction never really got off the ground.
Money Raised by NYA 2001:
HDSA brought all those items to the 2001 HDSA convention in San Diego and set up a table outside the banquet room on Saturday night and held an "NYA SILENT AUCTION". All the members of the NYA who were present at the convention manned the table, talking with interested parties, etc. People had the opportunity to look items over then bid on them. I forget how many we had, but the NYA raised $1,5.00 which was DOUBLED to $3,000.00 by the HDSA Matching Research Funds.
Naturally all the NYA members were quite excited about their first fund raising project's success! Because of this, HDSA has included the NYA Silent Auction as a part of the annual HDSA national convention agenda.
2002 NYA Silent Auction
The NYA is looking for donations from everyone to be auctioned off at the 2002 HDSA National Convention in Columbus, Ohio May 31-June 2, 2002. The auction will be held Saturday night, June 1st, prior to the
Awards Banquet.
Items Needed:
Possible items that would do well for the Silent Auction are:
Certificates: from nation-wide stores such as Sears, JCPenny, WalMart; chain restaurants such as Red Lobster, Friendly's, Burger King, etc.
Memorbilla: jewelry, t-shirts or sweatshirts from "famous places" e.g., major golf courses, Ground Zero, entertainers/rock stars etc.
Miscellaneous: Box of blank CDs, PalmPilot, day planners, clocks, etc. whatever you may have in unopened box that could be donated to help!
State Baskets: The NYA Team Leaders had a great idea to put together a "state basket" from their home state with the support of HDSA Chapters/Support Groups/CoE's etc. that would include things like state food products (cheese, honey, oranges etc), their national sports team memorabilia, etc.. This would be a great project for the Chapters/Support Groups/CoE's to work together as a team with the NYA members in their area in putting together these baskets.
Sports Memorabilia:
Any autographed sports items. If you belong to an HDSA Chapter have you looked at getting major sport teams to donate their old uniforms like Bill Johnston did in San Diego did with the Chargers? Was a major success with helping San Diego to raise over $200,000.00!!
Hand Made: Homemade quilts, or unique items that would appeal to everyone.
"Change for HD": NYA members discussed all members placing jars to collect change in local neighborhood stores, schools, churchs, libraries, etc. throughout their city to raise awareness and funding for the NYA.
Due Date:
Any item you feel would benefit the NYA 2002 Silent Auction should be sent to the above address to be received by on or before May 27, 2002.
