The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) is a nonprofit, grassroots, self-help, support and advocacy organization of consumers, families, and friends of people with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety disorders. Suicide: Suicide, while not a mental illness itself, is a tragic and potentially preventable public health problem. Every year, more than 30,000 Americans take their own lives. Suicide is the eighth-leading cause of death in the United States, and the third among youth, ages 15 to 24. Research shows that 90 percent of people who kill themselves have a diagnosable mental or substance abuse disorder or both, and that the majority of people have a depressive illness. Studies indicate that the most promising way to prevent suicide and suicidal behavior is through the early recognition and treatment of depression and other psychiatric illnesses.
- HBO Suicide Web site - In partnership with HBO, NAMI has developed a Web site with information about suicide, related mental illnesses, treatments, and outreach materials to accompany the HBO documentary, "Suicide."
